The image of mother and her child throughout all times has been a source of inexhaustible creative ideas and inspiration of various artists. The love given by the mother knows no limit or end, therefore this topic will always be popular and worthy of praise.

The painting “Mother” by artist Boris Prokorov, which was part of a series of his grandiose works, was created in 1958. Soviet art, the middle of the last century, mainly addressed the themes of war, politics, morality and socialism. In the creation of the Prophet “Mother” one can feel the echoes of the war recently experienced by people, as well as the author’s attitude against violence and terror in the name of children and the bright future of the whole country.

The picture depicts a young mother who is breastfeeding her baby, wrapped in a blanket and diaper. Her hair is hidden under a scarf, and a pea coat covers her shoulders. This indicates cool weather. The woman’s facial expression shows that she has a strong and lively character that could not be broken by severe trials during the war.

The position of her head and rather sharp features of her face can speak of determination and the hope of moving only forward, but, nevertheless, in her gaze cautiousness and sad thoughtfulness slip. The viewer can feel her tenderness and anxiety for her child, the desire to protect him no matter what the circumstances. For this, a woman holds a weapon on her right shoulder. Her whole image is filled with vitality, determination and spirituality.

Boris Prophets introduced new ideas of his time into the image of motherhood. The picture is more like a propaganda poster and designed in two-tone contrast. It brings to mind the memories of the war, and also makes you comprehend how exactly they affected the character and life of Russian people.
